Emily Sutton Lusby
I took a picture of four generations
of male Lusby’s,
my grandson, Mark Lusby, nine years old; my son and Mark's father,
Ray's father and Mark's grandfather, Edward Bryan Lusby fifty-six yrs.
old. The fourth was John Raymond Lusby; Edward's father, Ray's grandfather
and Mark's great-grandfather eighty yrs. old. This picture was taken
in 1969. I framed this picture. So many people asked me if I had the
family history to go with this picture? My answer was always, Well
I know all about these four generations, but have never traced the
family or written a history.
In May 1970, Edward's cousin, who he didn't know, came to Kent County
from Ohio, for information on the Bryan family. The Bryan family are
Edward's mothers people. The Bryan name is Edward's middle name. This
cousin had traced the Bryan family to the children of Rachel Bryan Lusby
and her husband John Raymond Lusby. He asked me to get all the dates
and names of their (j. Raymond and Rachel Bryan Lusby’s) children.
I did this and enjoyed it.
In may of 1971, Mr. George Thoma, our local radio station manager,
visited me to get the history of my family, "The Suttons".
This was for a special program Kent County was going to do for my brother,
Stanley B. Sutton. I thought I knew a lot about my family, but when
I had to put my knowledge down in writing I found I couldn't really
go back very far, or I knew some folks were related, but not exactly
how. Mr. Thoma thought we were a very interesting group of people.
This made me aware of the fact, that we all were. I still did nothing
about this.
In the late summer of 1971 Edmund P. Lusby, Sr. asked Edward to stop
by his home and look at some records he had on the Lusby’s. We
have always thought we were two sets of Lusby’s, but the same names
were always turning up in Ed's as in Edmunds. Edmund's uncle had always
heard that there were (3) three Lusby brothers come to the U.S. from
England and one settled in Kent County, one in Cecil County, and one
in St. Mary's County. Ed's family, is far as I have gotten are Kent County
Lusbys. Edmund's family started in Cecil County and moved to Kent County.
Helen Lusby Williams, Ed's sister, said their Uncle Herbert always said
the two families were related (but far to late) no one asked him how.
The winter of 71-72 I didn't get very far on this history. In the spring
of 72 I started again. The first thing I did was ask the elderly folks,
that I knew were related. I got a good bit of information. Then I visited
the cemeteries and got names and dates and began putting it together.
Mr. J. Raymond Lusby had the John Lusby family Bible. This gave me many
births and death dates. There were newspaper articles glued in the Bible,
which led me on. Then I visited more and more cemeteries in Kent County.
I was told by a Mrs. Jarrell (in Kent Co.) that the Olin Lowell farm
near Kennedyville was once a Lusby farm. Then I started tracing deeds
in Kent County Court House. I found this farm was left by Lusby to another
Lusby through a will. Therefore, I looked up the wills in Kent Co. of
the Lusbys and found widespread information. In one will a Hudson was
mentioned. I called Mr. and Mrs. Hope Hudson. Their Bible records and
their knowledge added more to my history. At this time I was so involved
I wanted all the Lusbys living to know what I had gathered, so I just
couldn't stop. Edmund P. Lusby was also interested in his family history,
so we decided to work together. We then visited cemeteries in Cecil County
and the court house for wills and deeds. There were two (2) farm graveyards
on our travels. We each made contact with other Lusbys, then we compared
and made corrections of the Lusbys families, or just where, or who this
information goes to.
At the time of this writing we have some names and records we haven't
identified yet, but as we or I do, I shall pass it on to you. I have
left the back of each sheet of paper, for future information. If you
ever get any information please send a copy to me.
When you read through the history you may think some names are spelled
wrong. This is the way they are recorded, either in the Bible, from the
Court House, or on tombstones. The marriages have either come from the
Court House records or Bible records.
The names Sassafras, Kennedyville, Urieville, Chestertown, Worton, Fairlee
and Chesterville are all Maryland towns and are in Kent County, MD. Chester
Cemetery is located in Chestertown, MD.
The last pages will be wills I have copied. There will also be a page
of Lusbys I haven't connected yet with the ones I already have.
I hope you enjoy this and pass it on to your children.
