The following researchers are seeking connections to their Riddle ancestors who are not known to be related to the researched Riddle families of VA, NC, KY and PA.

BARNETT RIDDLE b. c 1815 in Alabama. Marty Busby

I am a descendant of Barnett Riddle born about 1815 and lived in Jackson County Alabama then Giles County TN. He is listed in Church Mins. in 1838 with his wife Elizabeth Riddle asking for dismissal from church. He had several Children born in Giles County TN. John Meade Riddle who was one of his sons is my Great Great Grandfather and he moved to MS before moving to Red River County Texas. One of his sons James Turner Riddle is my Great Grandfather and one of James Turners sons Bill is my Grandfather. I have seen posts of the Barnett Riddle in the early 1800' from N.C. and Blount County Alabama. I have no direct connection to this line but have seen where people are mistaken my Barnett for these. It is said that my Barnett's father was born in Virginia but came to Alabama from N.C. I would like to correspond with anyone interested in or who might have information to share on this Riddle line.

Elizabeth is probably a sibling of Barnett Riddle. She married Zachariah Simmons in Lincoln CountyTennessee on Dec.28,1839 and then moved next door to Barnett Riddle in Lincoln Co., TN.

THOMAS RIDDLE b. ca. 1808 in Tn. David Autry

He was md. to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) before 1834.

The family lived in Meigs Co., Tn. per the 1850 census.

My direct ancestor, child no. 2 (John) md. Elizabeth (maiden name unknown, said to possibly have been Brown) moved to Monroe Co., Ky. about 1861.

The above family lived in Grayson Co., Tx. per the 1880 census.
My branch of the family eventually lived around Maud, Ok. by the early 1900's.

LAWSON RIDDLE b. Prince George's Co., MD circa 1790 Donna Thomas  

Searching for information on Lawson Riddle, born in Prince Georges, MD circa 1790.  He married Mary Earlougher in 1819 in Baltimore Co., MD.  They had five children, Elizabeth born circa 1821, Susanna born circa 1824, Anna Stacia born June 15, 1826, Beale Duvall born circa 1829 and George born January 3, 1832.

The only thing I know for certain is that his father is not Jacob Riddle, grandson of John Riddle who died in 1794.  I found Jacob's Will in the PG County Courthouse in Upper Marlboro, MD.  In the file was a letter from John which stated that he was the only living son of Jacob.  Jacob died in 1852, Lawson was alive and well at that time.  Lawson died circa 1872 in Howard County, MD.

I have quite a bit of information on Lawson's descendants and would be happy to share with others.

WILLIAM R. RIDDLE b. 1804 Lin Lawson  

My line does not come from any of your listed places, but possibly from the Pennsylvania area.  About 1804 my third great-grandfather, William R. Riddle was born in New Jersey, possibly the Ocean Grove area. He had several children among those were my second great-grandfather James b. 1836 who had siblings  Mary, Samuel, David, Garret, William Jr. and John. James married Mercy who had Annie b. 1856/57, George, Mary and Genevieve, and Charles, all born in New Jersey. If any other Riddles are from this area I would like to hear from them.

JAMES A. RIDDLE b1865 Butch Willard  

James A. Riddle (my great grandfather) b. 1865 d. 1943, Kanawha Co., WV.  He was married to Barbara S. Pauley b. 1869, Lincoln Co., WV d. 1947, Kanawha Co., WV.  The couple had five children.  Their names are Naomi Grace Riddle b. 1888; Bernard Eugene Riddle b. 1900; Hallie Riddle b. ?; Rosa Riddle b. 1890 and Edith Riddle b. 1902.  

JOHN RIDDLE b 1680 Barbara Rendina

John Riddle b. 1680  married Elizabeth Bowman.  Son, George, b., 1710, Son John Riddle Jr. b. July 25,1708 in Prince George's County married Elizabeth Lentall on February 9,1729. Children were: Jeremiah, Zachariah, John Samuel, James Clinton, Elizabeth ,Suzanna and Jacob.

Their son, Jacob Riddle Sr. b. 1764 married Sarah Lunn in 1762.  Children were Jacob and Elizabeth Lunn.  

Jacob and Sarah's son , Jacob Riddle Jr. married Mary Hopper on December 15, 1788. Children were: Eliza, Jacob, John Richard, Samuel and Elizabeth.   

Jacob and Mary's son, John Richard Riddle , born 1810  married Susan Johnson on August 22, 1838. Their children were: Archibald, Louisa, Rebecca, and James P.   

John and Susan's son, James P. b. January 10,1845 married Emma Frances Loveless on March 15,1869. Their children were:  John Richard, Carrie, Charles Henry, Rufus, Daisy, Cleveland, Lee , Robert, Anne Mae Louise and Clara.  

James and Emma's son , John Richard Riddle b. June 30,1870 married Nora Anne Hart. Their children were: Frank, Mary Anne, Charles W. James Noreen Katherine Louise, and Mabel.   

John Richard and Nora's daughter, Mary Anne Riddle  b. 1892 married Henry George Keller in 1913.  Their children were,Ella, Lawrence, Isabel,  Henry, Raymond, John and Mary Elizabeth.  My mother was Ella.  

FRANK RIDDLE of North Carolina born about 1840 Gary Nathan Phillips    

I'm looking for ancestors and descendants of Frank Riddle, born about 1840 NC, my gg-grandfather.    Here's what I know.

She and Frank had been married for 30 years (married abt. 1870).  In 1900 Frank and Liddie  had 7 children and all of them were still living, with 5 still at home.  The other two children were:

R.L. (Robert Lee) Son; b. 1873 (Note: Shown on the 1900 census as married to Louisa Jane Pressley and living in the Cartoogachaye township, Macon County, NC)
D.M. Dau; b. 1878 (Apparently married - no information on her)



OLIVER RIDDLE of Indiana, m. bef 1908 Pam Plachte

All that I know at this point is that Oliver Riddle lived in Indiana, probably Vigos Co in the early 1900's. He was married to Rosa Annie Woosley BEF 1908. One child, by the name of Glada(?) Riddle was born to them in Vigos Co. Indiana in 1908. Indiana Birth Index has the father as Oliver and mother as Woosley. 15-Jan-1908.

Another daughter Beulah Riddle married a Burgan. Have photo of her dated 1944, taken in Terre Haute, IN.

Another photo we have is one that has 4 Riddle children as adults taken in someone's home. At this time we have no further information on this family. Rosa Annie Woosley was b. in NC but grew up in Johnson County MO and possibly in Neosho Co. KS. Her parents lived in both places and seemed to go back and forth from MO to KS.

GEORGE RIDDLE b 1790 (possibly VA) Veryl Riddle

George Riddle, born 1790, possibly VA, died in 1859; married to Sarah Hale in possibly KY. His son James Riddle, born 1843 KY; wife's name unknown. His son George Albert born abt. 1864 in MO; married Mary Craft in Dunklin Co., MO. Their son was Elvis Lloyd Riddle, born 1894 in Dunklin Co., MO; married Etter Wood in Dunklin Co., MO. They had 2 children, Veryl Lee Riddle born 1921 in Dunklin Co., MO and Erma Riddle born 1926.

My earliest known Riddle ancestor is Roland (also spelled Rolin and Rowland) Riddle. He is found in the 1830 McMinn Co., TN census and by 1850 is living in Jackson Co., AL. His wife was Mary. Children were Mary, Henry, John, Thomas (my g-g-grandfather), Roland II, Ann, William and Duck? My g-grandfather is Thomas' son William Roland.
Roland, b. 1800, may have been the Rowland who along with his brother William were bound out in Wythe Co., VA in 1810. This William and Rowland were the sons of Thomas Riddle and Mary Dean. They also has a sister named Mary. I would appreciate contact from anyone with info on this family.

ARILLA CATHERINE RIDDLE of AR Dennis & Caron Haynes

Arilla Catherine Riddle m. Thomas R. Trammell abt. 1853/54 in Gentry, Benton Co., AR. Arilla was daughter of James Riddle b. in TN and Catherine ? b. in IL.  James moved his family to AR in 1844.

BARNETT RIDDLE of NC, AL and TX Molly Dixon

Barney (Barnett) Riddle. Found in the early 1800 census records for Chatham Co., NC, and is listed in the Ridlon book.  BUT...that Barney had a family in NC and is said to have died in 1880. My Barney m. my great-grandmother in Blount Co., AL in 1865, lived in Jackson Co., AL and then moved to Texas c. 1895-1900 and died shortly thereafter. He is buried in Bowie Co., TX. Two Barneys?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN RIDDLE b. abt. 1835 Kristen Wight Benjamin

Franklin Riddle b. abt. 1835 and lived in Wisconsin; m. Caroline Elizabeth Simons? My gg-grandmother is Harriet Evelyn Riddle b. 1866 in Lodi, Wisconsin.  Her father Benjamin Franklin Riddle b. abt. 1835.  The next link is sketchy.  I believe his father Benjamin Franklin Riddle b. 1804 in Bedford and removed to Beloit, Wisconsin. In Bedford records one source shows a Benjamin Franklin Riddle as child and another record shows a William Franklin Riddle as a child along with the other children.  Both the above b. in abt. 1835 in Bedford.  I am not having any luck with Wisconsin records.  From there BF Riddle father is William Riddle and continues to Gawn Riddle.

FRED RIDDLE of KY Jenny West 

Fred Riddle of Logan Co. was my g-grandfather.  I have run across Tobias in research but I haven't figured out the connection.  I feel they are related because my grandfather just took off from Pike Co., KY and went to Logan Co.  There must have been some kind of tie for him to go there.  Check also Mingo, Cabel, Wayne, and Lincoln Co. as these were all a part of Logan Co.
Fred Riddle was a son of Ishom, who was the son of Asa, who was the son of Tyree of Stokes Co. NC.  This may help in some way as Tobias could be a cousin, uncle or nephew.  I don't think he could be a brother as I have pretty good record of the direct family. 

JAMES RIDDLE b. 1823 Scotland Joyce 

My James Riddle was born in Scotland in 1823. (His parents supposedly were James and Anna both from Scotland). He died in Minneapolis, MN on Apr.24, 1906 and is buried in Lenawee Co., MI. Married either in Toledo, Ohio or Lenawee County, Michigan on March 21, 1856 to Margaret Penman or Pennman. She was born in Scotland in 1839 and immigrated to Toronto, Canada. May have been living in Detroit at the time she married. She died Nov. 2, 1922. They were my gg grandparents. They moved to Toledo, OH at some point and lived there until 1878, when they moved to Lenawee County, Michigan. I have been told that they ran a hotel in Toledo.
They had 4 children:

John Riddle b. abt. 1750? m. 1st Margaret DEVERSE.  (Came from Ireland according to Ridlon...p324 Riddles from Pittsburgh, PA) I have land records that show his wife as a Sarah in 1825, so he must have m. 2nd.  Children by his first wife (?) not necessarily in birth order.

At this point I need to say that one of the above sons listed in Ridlon's book as died single did not as there is a Hiram B. Riddle who signs off on John's land after he died and is not the son of James or my Isaac.

William is my line and from him to his son James to his son Dale to my father Dale and to me.

JOHN RIDDLE b. abt. 1820 Ireland RA856@aol.com

John and Nancy Riddle from Ireland and Canada.  John and Nancy McNeil Riddle had 10 children.  I believe John and Nancy were b. in the Republic of Ireland around 1820.

1. Mary Jane b. in Ireland m. a Baker in Canada.  Had no children.
2. James b. in Ireland and died at sea - buried there.
3. John - b. in Ireland died at sea - buried there.
4. George - grew to manhood , whereabouts unknown.
5. William - died in infancy.
6. James the second b. in Canada grew to manhood never m..  Settled further North in Canada and was a wagon maker.  Died 1881.
7. Allen b. in Canada and died in his 10th year.
8. Susan died as a baby.
9. Agnes died in infancy.
10. Thomas Dugan - Due to the tragic loss most of these children, Mrs. Riddle was over protective of Thomas who ran away from home at the age of 16 when he came to N.Y. to join the cavalry.  Shortly after John and Nancy Riddle settled at Troy NY their cabin burned.  Mary Jane was alone at the time with the twins, George and William and carried them to safety.  As the result of losing all their possessions they decided to move to Canada where the rest of their children were b. including Thomas Dugan.  Note that John and his son Thomas both m. McNeils.  They were of no known relation.

What I don't have is occupations or the exact place in Ireland the family came from.  The time they appeared to enter this country is about the period of the potato famine.  Thomas Dugan Riddle farmer, teacher and assessor b. in HAMILTON Co., Canada July 5, 1846.  He was the son of John and Nancy McNeil Riddle who were natives of Ireland who immigrated to the US and landed in NY.  They purposed moving west but because of the cholera outbreak abandoned this idea.  I am guessing they intended originally to move to western USA but they chose Canada after the fire?

During the war Thomas enlisted in the 22nd NY cavalry and served until the close of the war.  Was engaged in several hotly contested battles.  After the close of the war in 1865 he came west and engaged in farming.

In 1875 he was m. to Martha Jane McNeil who was b. May 1838 in Washington Twp.  She was the daughter of Allen & Agnes Struthers McNeil, both natives of Washington Co., PA.  Allen migrated west in 1827.  Agnes came shortly after and m. Allen in 1837.

JOHN H. RIDDLE b. 1798 MD Laura Clark 

John H. Riddle b. 11-11-1798 in MD.  m. Sarah Lundry.  They had one child that we know of and that was Meredith Monroe Riddle.  Meredith was b. 2-1-1832 in Spring River Township, IN.  He m. first, Ruth Reed around 1858.  They had 3 children in Iron Co., MO;
  Mary Elizabeth Riddle b. 2-11-1859 - d. 3-3-1859.
  Sarah Jane Riddle b. 2-22-1860.
  Geneva Angeline Victoria Ellen Riddle b. 3-21-1861.

Ruth Reed passed away and Dr. Riddle and his only surviving daughter Geneva moved in with his parents in 1868.  The 1860 census shows John H. m. to Mary (?).  We think this is Mary Lutz.  What happened to Sarah, Meredith's mother?  There is no further mention of her.  In 1870 the census shows John without a wife but shows that Meredith moved in with him along with his new wife and new son.

In 1868 Dr. M. M. Riddle m. Sarah Jane Snow Jenkins on 2-24-1868.  On 9-19-1868 they had my g-grandfather, Samuel R. S. Riddle.  He and the other children by Sarah were all b. in Des Arc, MO.  Other children were;
Emily Arinary Riddle b. 7-13-1873 - d. 5-21-1902 Ravenden Springs, AR.
James Elich Riddle b. 4-6-1871 Des Arc, MO.
Monroe M. Riddle Jr. b. 9-1-1876 Des Arc, MO.

Sarah Snow also had a daughter by a previous marriage named Mary Jenkins who m. a Robert Riddle a few months after her mother's death in 1877.  Their marriage must have been annulled because she was living with her step-father in the 1880 census for Randolph Co., AR.  Sarah Snow Jenkins Riddle died in Ravenden Springs, AR so they must have moved there abt. 1876 soon after the birth of Monroe, Junior.

In 1877 Dr. M. M. Riddle m. Mary Francis LeMastis Todd.  She had a son Joseph Todd from a previous marriage.  They were m. in AR.

JOHN PRESTON RIDDLE of AR Dewey Cline 

J.P. (John Preston) Riddle.  On his marriage license he is listed as J.P. Riddle (30) who m. Sidney Adline Vance (19) on October 18, 1888 in Strickler, Washington Co., AR.  He was ordained as Minister of the Gospel of Christ, Church of Christ, April 3, 1893 in Muskogee, Pittsburg Co., OK (Creek Indian Territory at that time).  Sidney Adline Vance is listed as Lucille Adalide Vance and J.P. Riddle is listed as John Preston Riddle on the SS-5 application of their youngest son Dewey Hobson Riddle b. 12 JUL 1900, Cribbs (believed to be present day Krebs) OK.  Sidney Adline Riddle is listed on the 1910 Creek Co., OK Census in the city of Sapulpa as Sarah A. Riddle, head of household, Clifford E. age 16, Nicholas age 13, and Dewey H. age 10.  According to what little has been passed down, J.P. Riddle was a traveling preacher and deputy sheriff who was killed when Dewey Hobson Riddle was either 7 months old or 7 years old depending on version.  Nicholas was killed on the railroad tracks between Tulsa and Sapulpa abt. 1917.  Dewey passed away in 1980 and Clifford was last noted in Detroit, MI in the early 1960's.  Supposedly had a son Clifford E., Jr. who moved to Colorado.

Lafayette Riddle b. approximately 1875 (maybe earlier) in Browning, MO or maybe TX, m. Emma Rachel Carroll in 1910 at Madill, OK.  One son, Roy Casal Riddle.

Lewis RIDDLE b. abt. 1778, VA and probably d. in the 1850's in Bath Co., KY (disappears from census although he could have moved) m. Elizabeth BARBEE, 14 Jun 1803 in Caroline Co., VA (bond issued 24 Feb 1803).  Moved to Bourbon Co., KY by 1807 and to Bath Co., KY 1817.

Nancy RIDDLE was b. 7 May 1815 in KY, m. William R. HALEY in 1835 supposedly in KY and is buried in Hardesty OK on 1 Jan 1903.  1880 census has them in Knox Co. MO.

NEWTON RIDDLE b. 1842  MO Shirley Riddle Hayworth 

Newton Riddle b. 1842 in Cooper Co., MO.  He died in 1918 in LA Co., CA.  His 1st wife was Mildred Turley b. in 1844 and died in 1879.   He m. Martha O'Howell in 1847.  There was a son b. to Newton but with which wife has not been determined.  His name was Jesse Riddle.
 
My grandfather, Joseph William Riddle was b. Jun 20, 1881 in Arrow Rock in Cooper Co., MO.  and his mother was Martha O'Howell.  He died Feb 1961 in Pomona, LA Co., CA.  He m. Bessie Staten Aug 7, 1907 in Pomona, CA.

I have found two names in the 1860 census from Cooper Co., MO that may be Newton Riddle’s parents but have not been able to prove either.  They are John W. Riddle b. in 1825 in KY (a pill agent) and Susan Riddle b. in 1829 in KY.

John Watt RIDDLE  b. Apr 18, 1855 - d. April 15, 1913 m. Susannah HEMPHILL in Butler Co. on Dec 6, 1882. They had four sons, Robert S, James C, Melvin Watt (my grandfather) and Harry.  Melvin and Harry were b. in Butler Co., PA.  Harry died there Jan 14, 1980.

Ruth Louise Riddle.  B. abt. 1900-1905, m. Vernon Harlow Duke in 1922.  Her parents are thought to have been Jasper Riddle and Artie Noel.  I have seen them listed as descendents of Stephen Riddle (1737) and Elizabeth Douthit.

THOMAS WILLIAM RIDDLE b. 1860/1 Linda Lanea 

Thomas William Riddle's headstone gives his year of birth as 1861.  His death certificate gives the birth date as Jan. 13, 1860.  Thomas Riddle and Rachel Lemons were m. May 1860 Jackson Co., AL.  Thomas William lived with Rachel according to census, until at least 1880.  A William Lemons was bondsman for his marriage to Margaret Lynn.  The 1860 census of Jackson Co., AL shows Thomas age 22, Rachel age 23, Ransom Carmicheal, Margaret age 4 b. TN, Lucinda age 2, b. TN.  No mention of Thomas William.  1870 census, Marshall Co., AL shows Rachel 33 b. TN living with a Thomas Boggess family, no children mentioned.  Next door with no apparent adult a family by the name of Lamons: Ransom R. age 15, Margaret age  13, Lucinda age 11 and Thomas W. age 8.  Thomas W. is also shown with Rachel Riddle in the 1880 Marshall Co., AL census but in his death certificate it states Thomas Riddle as father and mother unknown.  Information sent to me by another researcher believes the Thomas, father of Thomas William, was m. to a Minerva Bowers before 1880 census and they had two children.  A daughter named Frances who had a son named Luke Riddle, so assume she was unm. and a son who had 14 children.  Family stories state that Thomas and his sister Lucinda were worked extremely hard by a Dr. Thomas and at first chance they ran away. Wonder if this was Thomas Boggess?

Thomas Riddle Sr, born ca. 1798 in Frankfort, KY, married Hulda Osborn, born 1808 in KY and d. 04-15-1856 in Lynnville, IN She was buried at the Lynnville Cem. in Lynnville, IN in Warrick County, IN. The Osborne's were living in Warrick County, IN including her brother whose name was Warden...which would be why they named their first child Warden. They had the following children:
1. Warden (Worden) Riddle born 11-11-1825 in Nelson Co., KY., married Ann Nettle 05-30-1848 in Shelby Co., IN and born ca. 1828. Was the daughter of Charles and Mariah Nettle. Warden and Ann came to Daviess Co., KY in 1848. He died in 1910. They had 5 children, only know of 3 and all were b. in Daviess Co., KY. (1) John born ca. 1850, (2) William b. ca. 1852, (3) Laura b. ca. 1852.
2. Thomas Riddle Jr. b. ca. 1827 in KY He married Elizabeth Nettle 01-12-1848 in Shelby Co., IN Their children all b. in Daviess Co., KY
